We returned after a three week long enchanting trip from Myanmar in late August 2012.  This country is incredible for its sights, but more so for its people.  No one epitomizes the loving, caring, humble, and honest attitudes of the people of Myanmar than Minthu and Kyaw Swe.  These two lovely souls did not treat us like clients or customers, they treated us like family.  In fact, towards the end of our four days in Bagan, we developed a friendship that we hope will last a lifetime.  The memories that they helped us create still makes us smile and we treasure the fact that we are still able to write Minthu and say hello.  There is more than one way to see Bagan.  You can rent a car and ride around, but you’ll miss everything around you.  You can rent a bike and go it on your own, but do yourself a favor and save that for another destination.  You really want to hire a horse cart and just exist in this dreamy land for the time you spend here.  Why anyone would want to pass up a resource like Minthu and Kyaw Swe is beyond me.  Make full use of them, let them educate you.  Believe me, the lonely planet or the internet will fall way short of anything they can tell you.  Let them take you around their own hometown, go to a tea shop with them, try some betel nut, and let Minthu educate you on Bagan, its incredible pagodas, its history, and Myanmar.  We’ve travelled to almost every country in Asia and never have we stumbled upon these treasured souls.  Thank you my friends.  We hope desperately to come see you again soon.

Our trip to Myanmar in July 2012 led us also to Bagan. On recommendation of other travellers we contacted the horse-cart driver Min Thu, who showed us the impressive temples and the surrounding of Bagan within three days. He was extremely friendly, thoughtful and reliable and he attended to our wishes and expectations. Being a resident of Old-Bagan, he was familiar with the history of the place and was able to give us full answers to our questions both in English and German. Min Thu also provided us with an insight into the life of the inhabitants by accompanying us to a market and a traditional village where we could talk to the locals. He does not only speak English fluently but also speaks German very well and thus was a big help for us.

Should we return to Bagan, we will definitely ask Min Thu again to accompany us. We can recommend the friendly, dedicated young man and his horse Susu to all travellers who wish to explore Bagan with a horse-cart.

Myanmar was the hidden country in ASEAN to me. I decided to visit this beautiful country in last July 2012. Hard to say how much I enjoyed the trip but the most interesting time was the day in Bagan.

I was very excited when my friend told me that we would take horse cart from Bagan airport to the hotel. I had ever never done it before since I always take taxi to hotel after the flight.

Bagan is very peaceful place so I felt very secure when travel to hotel from the Bagan airport.  Especially, the tour guide named Min Thu greeted us at the Airport with very warm smile and detailed instruction for the Sightseeing schedule. The nice horse cart is owned and managed by Min Thu.

After check-in, I started the Bagan discovery day with Min Thu’s horse cart.

It took me to the most beautiful temple, the tallest temple, the biggest temple…..and many other temples out of nearly 5,000 temples in Bagan. I also enjoyed the fresh air when the horse cart passed by the peanut and corn fields.

Historical knowledge of Min Thu brought me back to the 11-12th century when the temples here were built. You could not visit all must-see in Bagan if you did not take the horse cart.  The horse cart allowed me to visit the villages with very small road where the car could not enter. I learned how the local Bagan people live by observing their daily life. I returned to hotel in the twilight after spent whole day on horse cart and still felt so comfortable.

Thanks Min Thu and his horse cart for bringing the most impressive experience of the trip to Myanmar.

I will see you again in Bagan…

Minthu served as a guide for me while I visited Bagan in Myanmar . He is very thoughtful, friendly and helpful. He took me around the region in his horse cart- he could not have been a better guide- personable, knowledgeable and extremely considerate.

I highly recommend him!

We had the good fortune of being recommended Minthu’s horse cart service for our time in Bagan, which ended up being a definite highlight of our time in Myanmar. Navigating the dirt roads at unhurried pace, we felt transported back to a simpler time, to those halcyon days of youth in the Burmese countryside. Minthu was even kind enough to take us on a walking tour of his village (Taung Bi). Such warmth and openness! His knowledge of both history and geography of the individual stupas/pagodas and proficiency in English ensure an enriching tour complete with excellent photo opportunities. Min’s brother, Kyaw, also provides a very reliable taxi service to and from the airport, to Salay, and to Mt. Popa, which we recommend as well. You are in good hands with the Swe brothers!

Kyaw Swe was the person that started me on my way. He was kind, clean, and courteous, could speak understandable English, knew the area, made good suggestions, and knew from where the best pictured could be taken, and his air conditioning worked. I got to see and truly enjoy Began and saw many wonderful sights and met many wonderful people our day trip to Mt Popa. I toured his village, drank the local beer, and ate the local food with absolutely no problems. Kyaw Swe is a family man, with wife and two children, one only a few months old now. He is working to develop his business and feed his family. If you engage him as your driver and guide, you will not be disappointed; you will get to see and enjoy the real people and the real culture of Myanmar and Burmese people. He will make your trip the best it can be.
